What Are Custom NPCs?

Markiii-Rust replaces vanilla scientists with custom-configured NPCs spread across the map at monuments, events, and key locations. These NPCs are divided into 4 difficulty tiers, each colour-coded so you can immediately tell how dangerous they are before engaging.

Lower-tier NPCs are manageable for new players, while top-tier purple NPCs are heavily armoured, accurate, and deadly — designed to challenge even experienced players with the best gear. The reward scales with the difficulty: harder NPCs drop significantly better loot.

Difficulty Tiers

Each tier is colour-coded on the NPC's name tag so you can identify the threat level at a glance. Higher tiers have more health, better accuracy, stronger weapons, and superior loot.

Tier 1
ColourGreen
DifficultyEasy
Gear LevelLight / Primitive
AccuracyLow
LootBasic
Beginner-friendly. Found at lower-tier monuments like gas stations, supermarkets, and smaller outposts. Basic weapons and light armour. A good starting challenge for new players.
Tier 2
ColourOrange
DifficultyModerate
Gear LevelMedium / Roadsign
AccuracyMedium
LootGood
A step up. Found at mid-tier monuments. Better weapons and armour, tighter aim. Bring proper gear and meds — don't underestimate them.
Tier 3
ColourRed
DifficultyHard
Gear LevelHeavy / Metal
AccuracyHigh
LootGreat
Dangerous. Found at high-tier monuments like Launch Site, Military Tunnels, and Oil Rigs. Full military gear, accurate weapons, and they hit hard. Go fully kitted.
Tier 4
ColourPurple
DifficultyBrutal
Gear LevelElite / Heavy Plate
AccuracyVery High
LootExcellent
The toughest NPCs on the server. Elite-level gear, deadly accuracy, massive health pools. Found at the hardest locations and boss events. Bring your best gear and stack every advantage you can.
💀 If you see a purple name tag, think twice before engaging unprepared. These NPCs will shred you in seconds without proper armour, meds, and a combat-optimised build.

Gear Up — Stack Your Advantages

Custom NPCs are tough — but other server systems can give you a serious edge. Combine these to dominate even the hardest tiers:

💎
EpicLoot — Operators Set
The Operators buff set reduces vehicle fuel consumption at base — but more importantly, equipping EpicLoot enhanced armour and weapons gives you raw stat bonuses that make a massive difference in NPC fights. The Hunters set specifically boosts NPC damage with a Survivalist perk at 4 and 6 pieces.

🌳
SkillTree — Combat Skills
The SkillTree Combat tree is your best friend for NPC fights. Level up your combat skills to gain bonus damage against NPCs, damage reduction, faster reload speeds, and more. Higher prestige levels unlock even stronger combat perks that make T3 and T4 NPCs far more manageable.
→ Read the SkillTree Guide
The sweet spot: EpicLoot Hunters set (bonus NPC damage + Survivalist) combined with SkillTree combat perks (damage boost + damage reduction). Stack both and even purple-tier NPCs become beatable solo with the right positioning.

Combat Tips

Look at their name tag colour: Green = T1 (easy), Orange = T2 (moderate), Red = T3 (hard), Purple = T4 (brutal). You can see this when looking at them at close-medium range. The colour tells you exactly what you're dealing with.
T1 (Green): Basic armour and a decent gun is fine — even a revolver will work. T2 (Orange): Roadsign gear minimum, bring meds. T3 (Red): Full metal armour, assault rifle or LMG, plenty of meds. T4 (Purple): Best gear possible — metal armour, EpicLoot enhanced weapons, medical syringes, and ideally combat SkillTree perks.
Generally, the monument difficulty matches the NPC tier. T1 at gas stations, supermarkets, harbours. T2 at Dome, Water Treatment, Sewer Branch. T3 at Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Oil Rigs. T4 at the hardest locations and special events. The map layout will give you a natural progression as you gear up.
Yes — killing NPCs awards SkillTree XP. Higher tier NPCs give more XP, so farming T3 and T4 zones is an excellent way to level up your combat skills while also getting great loot.
Absolutely — the Medium (+25 HP) and Max (+50 HP) custom syringes from the Mixing Table heal significantly more than vanilla syringes. Stack a hotbar full of Max Syringes for T3/T4 fights — they can save your life.
Yes — NPCs respawn after a timer that varies by location. Monuments will repopulate over time, so you can return for more runs. Some event-based NPCs are one-time spawns that only appear during the event.
